In this article we propose a new fast method with great potential for multiresolution pyramid decomposition of signals and images The method allows unusual exibility in choosing a lter for any task involving the multiresolution analysis and synthesis Using our method one can choose any low pass lter for the multiresolution ltering This method enabled us to choose the best lters for SPIHT image compression for the corresponding support sizes The compression results for our tap lters are better than those of the wavelet lters and approximately the same as those of the lters while at the same time our tap lters are faster than lters EDICS SP This material is based upon work suppoorted by the National Science Foundation under Grant No NCR The government has certain rights in this material Currently with Thomson Financial Services E mail nick polyak tfn com Corresponding author
